More about Ethiopian coffee....

Did you know Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee? Kaldi, the goatherd, played his flute so his goats would follow him home after a long day, but the goats did not come. He played his flute again, but still no goats. He found them still playing, full of energy, while eating the cherries from a shrub Kaldi had never seen before.  He ate some cherries, and he too was full of energy! ~ the early legendary beginnings of coffee.

Only women roast the beans in Ethiopia, and serve the fresh brew before the meal, in a coffee ceremony, serving the eldest first.

“Fair Trade membership is very important to our organization and its members.”

—Tadesse Meskela,
Oromia General Manager

Ethiopia, the birthplace of coffee, has more than 1.2 million coffee growers and approximately 15 million households dependent on coffee for their livelihoods. Coffee accounts for more than half of Ethiopia’s export earnings. OCFCU (Oromia Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union) is the largest Fair Trade coffee producer in Ethiopia. Oromia was founded in 1999 when 35 small Ethiopian cooperatives came together with the goal of exporting their coffee directly to the specialty market.  Oromia sells its coffee to Fair Trade markets in the United States and Europe.
